The Semester is OVER!

This morning at 7:20am I was in class anxiously awaiting my final to begin. I bubbled in my name and student number on my scantron. Then at 7:30am I was given the 100 question final exam. I feel like I did well. It was 50 cumulative and 50 new information questions.

With my first semester officially over and I am awaiting my grades, I have a few moments to reflect on the semester. I feel that it was a good first semester back. The classes were great, a good choice to get back into the swing of college life and I did learn a lot of stuff this semester.

I am looking forward to next semester. I feel that the classes are going to be a little more difficult but I am ready for it.

I am thankful for my teachers, they were great. Also to all of those who supported me this semester, your positive thoughts and words helped to get me through. Sometimes all I needed was someone to tell me "Its worth it." That would help me get through the night at class.

Now I get about 6 weeks to celebrate my birthday and the holidays. I will happily take this time to relax and work. Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Until next time....

Almost done...

The semester is almost over. It's a little sad and a little joyous. I am happy to have made it through with no real breakdowns or issues. I only missed 1 day of class, which I think is great.

Last night at class was the group presentation. We did well I think, but it was not without issues. One of my teammates decided he needed a shower in the bathroom at school before our presentation. He was about 15 minutes late to class, had me panicking since we were the first group to present, and came in in sweats. I didn't care at that point. He arrived. That in and of itself made me happy. After that little stressful bit our presentation went off without a hitch. We all did great I think. Even Nick, who really did not know what were on his slides in the presentation. I realized the night before that Nick's slides were not in the presentation. Not sure how that happened, but it did. So I went through what he had previously sent me and chose the main points and made slides for him. Luckily his information was no different from what he had sent me. So as he was reading from his notes, the slides were right in line with what he was saying.

My final for my online class is being taken Monday. I wanted to take it before class yesterday, but I had lots of computer issues over the weekend which made me unable to study. Friday night I went to study and my computer screen freaked out and went black with little white lines. So I had a glass of wine and went to bed. Saturday the computer was fixed and working, but the internet at my house was not allowing the video to play fully through. It would rebuffer every few seconds. It took me 1.5 hours to watch 10 minutes of video. Again, after almost crying, I had a glass of wine and went to bed. Sunday, after visiting my sister, bro-in-law, mom, nephew, and aunt, who was flown in from Arizona, I took my happily working computer to the library, only to find out that the library closes at 5pm on Sundays. Then I went to Starbucks in downtown Mountain View, where I was able to sign into free Wi-Fi because I have a registered Starbucks card. At last! I was able to watch 2 episodes of my class! A few minutes into the third episode my computer screen went black. I could still hear her, but there was no visuals to help me out. I tried everything get my teacher back onto the screen but it didn't work. Since I was 1 hour away from the Amazing Race Finale, I shut down my picture-less computer and went home. And for those of you who watch Amazing Race, I really want to belay down Mandalay Bay! That looked like soo much fun! I watched 2 more episodes of my class on Monday night and will continue to study this weekend. I figured that I would rather study more and get a better grade than rush into the final.

Please think happy thoughts on Monday, December 14th at around 7:30am. That is when I will be at school taking my final. Then I am done with this semester!!

Until next time...

Today is the Day!

After 15 weeks, tonight is the night that everything is due for my writing class. After spending 3 very quiet but long hours in the library, yes you read right, I was in the LIBRARY, my scholarly paper is done. So is everything else that is due today, my resume, cover letter, business letter and everything for our oral presentation.

We may not do the group oral presentation tonight because one of our teammates has the flu. But either way, all the paperwork for it is complete. That is such a good feeling and thought! I really don't think you understand.

Next up is my final for my Nutrition class. I am hoping to take it next week before my class on Tuesday. But I can take it any day next week. I figure that i will see how comfortable I am next Tuesday with the information and go from there.

I can't believe the semester is over. I am happy with how I did this semester. I only missed one class, I didn't get sick, and only got lost once or twice on campus.

Bring on Spring 2010!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello all!

I know its been a while, but things have been quite busy these days.

Here is a quick update. I got a 94 and 84 on my two recent midterms and received full credit for the extra credit paper for my online class, Nutrition for Health Professionals. I turned in my Diet Self Study, but have not received the grade for that yet. I should get full credit. I was pretty happy with those scores. The next test is the Final which is on December 14th i believe. Then school is done for the semester! Yay!

For my writing skills class, we have this week off, but next week everything is due: my paper, my resume, business letter, resume cover letter and we are doing our group presentation. Beaucoup de stuff! But after next tuesday, that class will be finished! And we are the first group presenting. I requested that, I wanted to get it over with.

Work has also been busy, both jobs, but that is a good thing. I am very happy to have a job. And a job with people I enjoy is even better!

Everyone have a great Thanksgiving! Enjoy, eat a lot, but not too much because that is how you become obese :-)

Until next time...

This week was a blur...

This past week was tiring. I was very busy. I worked both of my jobs, went to school, watched 2 episodes of my online class, went to the Sharks game on Saturday nite, had a migraine on Sunday, which meant I did not do any form of studying or homework, and then back at work today.

I am starting to work on my scholarly paper for my writing class. I have 2 ideas and not sure which one to go with. I have decided to stray from my usual topic "Eating Disorders" because I feel that I have written that paper many times now. Even though it is something I know alot about and always want to learn more, I am going to go out of my comfort zone and do something different. My two thoughts are Childhood Obesity: is it genetic or do kids eat too much crap? or The Acai Berry: does it really do a body good? I am torn between the 2 so if you wish to voice your choice please feel free to do so.

My group in the writing class has to do a presentation. We have decided to do it on Prescription Drug Usage Among College Students. There are 5 people in the group: 1 nurse, 2 OT, 1 judicial studies, and me, the nutritionist. We wanted to do something that involved all of our majors, and we feel this does. I think this will be a very interesting topic because we are all in college and know the pressures are out there.

I have another midterm in 2 weeks for my online class, so I need to get to studying and watching more eopisodes. Luckily I am already comfortable with Nutrition. It is just a matter of studying and learning the information as opposed to just memorizing it. This is my field, what I want to do. I need to know it backwards and forewards.

Alright, back to studying and writing.

Until next time...

To DC and Back

For those of you who have never been to Washington DC, you need to go! It is such a beautiful city. The whole area is fabulous. And yes I skipped a day of school to go, but hey it is an educational and historical place.

Here is my trip in a nutshell...

We flew into Dulles Airport, arrived at around Midnight on Monday. Luckily we had a layover in Colorado so we grabbed some dinner there before the long leg of the flight. Because as anyone who flys knows, they no longer give you free meals on the flight. We stayed at the Sheraton in Herndon, near the Dulles airport. Nice hotel, nice people, comfy beds. No complaints here.

Tuesday I got to sleep in which felt great. Later that day we went to the new Air and Space Museum, the one where they filmed Transformers 2. Very cool place, lots planes. Then we drove into DC and drove around looking at the monuments and White House because by this time it was getting dark and things were all lit up. We ate dinner in a spanish tapas restaurant in Downtown Georgetown, which is a beautiful place.

Wednesday we went to the Potomac river. It was beautiful. Then we drove around looked at lots of nice big houses. We all know I enjoyed that. The houses out there, Unbelieveable. Beautiful brick, lovely patios. I loved it! Then we went and had dinner and drinks in Reston. We had California rolls in DC. They were different, yummy though. I prob had a few too many drinks that night. But you know, its vacation. That is what you do.

Thursday was our tourist day. We drove into DC, went by the Pentagon, then to Arlington. A lot of emotion at Arlington. Saw JFK's grave, that was pretty cool. And the tomb of the unknown soldier is very sad, and quiet. Then we went to the Smithsonian's: the Natural History, American History, Archives, where we saw the Constitution. We also went to the Washington Monument and the Capital Building. I did as much as I could. I know I missed lots of places, but by this time it was 4p, I had a headache because we hadn't eaten much that day, and I was ready to be back at the hotel. We grabbed dinner in Georgetown again then went back to the hotel where I slept fabulously.

Friday we were up at 7a east coast time, which is 4a here, had a long flight from Dulles to LAX then back to SJ. We got home, went and grabbed lunch then I went home and slept for 12 hours. Aah that felt soo nice.

It was a wonderful trip. I want to go back because I know I missed things to see. And I didn'e see Pres. Obama or Michelle.

Until next time...

A week off...

Sorry it has been a while.

So this week, because of the damn budget cuts, my Tuesday night writing class had a furlough day. So I did not have class this week. I do however have a midterm on Monday. This weekend is devoted to studying. Go me!

For those of you who know that I get horrible headaches and migraines, I went to see the head doctor this past Tuesday. I now have to keep a headache diary for the next month to see if there are any patterns in my headaches. We are trying to figure out what is causing them and try and see if we can get rid of them. However, now that I am having to keep a diary I have noticed my headaches alot more. So hopefully we can get this taken care of.

Next week, after my midterm on Monday, I am flying to Washington DC with my hunny. I have never been there and am very excited to go. If anyone has any ideas of things to do there, please let me know.

Alright I am off to study! Wish me luck and think happy thoughts!

Until next time...

Another week, another paper

Another week, another paper. On Tuesday I was given another paper to write. This one about my Muse and my Critic. The issue I am having is that I don't think I have a muse. This is proving to make this paper difficult. So far I have found writing a little more difficult than it used to be.

And on top of that, I battled a migraine from Friday to Sunday. And Saturday was Normans 7th birthday party. That was extremely difficult to handle with a migraine. The Mitooka clan left at 3:30p and seriously I went to bed right after they left and did not get up until this morning. And I still had a migraine this morning. I took 2 Imitrex on Friday, 3 on Saturday. Finally Sunday, today, I took 2 Excedrin Migraine and it went away. However since I have been typing on my computer I can feel it coming back.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to write a paper with a migraine? Even to write a paragraph with a migraine? I am trying to write this paper which is due Tuesday and am finding it very difficult to look at my computer screen. Then I ask myself am I just getting old? I need to tell myself every day that this is all worth it. Sometimes its hard to see that it is worth it. But then I remember everything that I will be gaining and the confidence I will feel when I am walking to get my diploma and that gives me the power for that day.

Thank you all who have supported me. And I have been asked why college, why go back? And to that I answer because I can. And because I want to. I have wanted to for years now and just decided that now is as good of a time as any. I am not getting any younger and it is not going to get any easier. The older you get the harder it is going to be to get back into the hang out being a student, of which I am finding it difficult to do already.

Ok time to get back to my paper, something that I am going to get graded on. Please everyone think happy thoughts for me that my migraine goes away.

Until next week...

The Decision to go back

A couple years ago I decided that I wanted to go back to school to get my degree in Nutrition. I received my AA 5 years ago and have not been to school since. Going back was a difficult decison. But one that I am very happy I made.

Now I have decided to keep a blog of my time at San Jose State. Like I said, going back to school after 5 years is a very difficult decison, especially since I am also working full time. I am also keeping this blog in the hopes that if anyone else is thinking of going back to school after some years, this will show that it is possible.

Classes started August 24th. I am taking 2 classes, Nutrition for Health Professional, which is online and Writing 100W, which is Tuesday nites. My first day there I was on campus, went to buy my books, and looked around. I felt like one of the oldest people there. I know that probably isn't completely true, but that is how I felt. Even in my writing class, I am in a group of 5 and I am the oldest in my group by 5 years. I have already had to write one paper. It took a little longer than before to write a paper, I will admit. But I think that it will get easier over the next few weeks.
In my Nutrition for Health Professionals class we are doing a diet self study. That should be interesting. I am looking forward to it. I have already gone to MyPyramid.gov, which is the website of the new food pyramid, and entered my information. It told me that I should be eating 2,200 Calories a day. I definitely do not do that, but I figure that after I do the diet self study I will see where I am.
So keep posted, I will do my best to keep this up to date. This blog is also an outlet for me to discuss all of my feelings and what I am going through while I am on this journey. It is going to be difficult I am sure, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Until next time...
